Died in a dead river.
Three days ago Doğus Tavukçu (17) jumped to his death
from the Taşköprü bridge over the Ergene River in Uzunköprü
district of Edirne province. Efforts to recover Tavukçu's body
are continuing but because of the river's cancerous toxicity AFAD
(search & rescue) teams and divers cannot enter the water and must
conduct the search from boats on the surface.
Shall we not go for a swim?
It has been learned that because of the river's pollution, the search
teams, who are wearing masks over their mouths, have recorded
that they cannot even use sonar, as a result of the mud and chemical
waste on the river's floor.
The Ergene River originates in the Yıldız Mountains on the Black
Sea coast and flows through Çorlu, Çerkezköy, Lüleburgaz, Babaeski,
Pehlivanköy and Uzunköprü before joining with the Meriç River.
From there the flow empties into the Gulf of Saroz. Because of the
chemical waste in the river its color is black and there are no living
things in it. The Government plans to clean the Ergence y 2017 (!).
Nasty!

Current residents at their weekly community association meeting.
Vordonisi Island sank in the Sea of Marmara in the year 1010 A.D.,
as the result of a major earthquake in Istanbul. Now, the municipality
of Maltepe has launched an effort to examine the undersea islands.
Once completed the study will be presented to UNESCO for inclusion
in the UNESCO list of cultural heritage.
Maltepe Mayor Ali Kılıç explained that "we will use Carbon-14 and
other scientific methods to date the remains. Because of the sea life
that had become resident on the rocks it will not be possible to see
the main monastery there completely." Vordonisi is actually comprised
of two islands - Great Vordo and Little Vordo, making them the 10th
and 11th islands of Istanbul. Byzantine historian Semavi Eyice found
records of Vordonisi in 1936, to include reference to a monastery that
was the twin of the Styros Monastery on the nearby mainland in
Küçükyalı.

Train-stopping-beautiful fiancé A.H.
In Konya, police recieved a bomb threat about the Konya-
Ankara high-speed train. The train was evacuated and sniffer
dogs checked for a bomb. After 1.5 hours of searching no bomb
was found.
As police investigated, they determined that M.C. (20), a soldier
on leave who was to return to his unit in Ankara on the train, had
made the bomb threat in order to spend more time with his fiancé
A.H. in Konya (!). Both M.C. and A.H. were taken into custody
by police and as they went to the police station M.C. took exception
to the press photographers, shouting at them "you don't even know
what happened and you're taking pictures!"

"The dog ate my razor."
Çorum Governor Ahmet Kara visited Alaca district the day before
yesterday and attended the certificate ceremony for graduates of the
entrepreneurs course given by KOSGEB within the scope of the "Here,
Women's Crafts" project.
After the ceremony Governor Kara toured schools, one of which was
the Alaca Mimar Sinan İmam Hatip Middle School. There he was met
by principal Kasım Kütük, whose beard prompted the Governor to
remark "what's that on your face? Cut the beard or lose your job.
That's no way for a principal to look."

T-shirt reads:"Dear Past, Thanks For All The Lessons.
Dear Future, I am ready." Battled-tested Çilem hanım.
In Adana, Çilem Karabulut (24), the mother of one child, killed
her husband Hasan (33) last year. Çilem explained that "my
husband wanted to drag me into prostitution. I shot him with his
own gun." Çilem was arrested and faces a life sentence. At the
initial court hearing she said that "every day I was expecting death
because of my husband's violence."
The public prosecutor had this to say: "Hasan had a record of 19
crimes on the polic blotter and he was violent toward his wife. Nine
times Çilem obtained court orders to protect her from her husband.
On the day of the incident Çilem tried to protect herself. The suspect's
(Çilem's) right of self-defense should be discussed."

One must concede that the resemblance is uncanny...
The personnel responsible for putting a picture of former Turkish
President Celal Bayar, who served from 1950 to 1960, over the name
of the current Advisory Assembly Chairman Sadı Irmak in the 2016
edition of the Turkish Parliament agenda have been reprimanded.
Copies of the agenda are in circulation and a new printing will not be
made, although undistributed copies have been corrected. A total of
11,300 copies of the agenda were printed, at a cost of 68,440.79 TL.
Always tough trying to control the agenda...

Science Fun: Retro Rocket, Pedal Power

Captain Kırk wants first one. "Set a course for Starbase 27..."
Celalettin Turkar (48), an elementary school teacher in
Şebinkarahisar district of Giresun province, had obtained a
patent by designing a rocket that is powered from above,
contrary to normal practice. Turkar will introduce his invention,
at the invitation of the Turkish Patent Institute, at the 2016
International Istanbul Invention Fair, between 3 and 6 March
2016.
Eat your heart out, NASA
A graduate of Istanbul University's Maritime Products Faculty,
Turkar could not find work in his field so he became a teacher.
Twenty years ago during an experiment he discovered the "internal
thrust" rule, explaining that "I was doing an experiment in science
class with a tube when all of a sudden the tube flew backwards,
contrary to the laws of physics. I tried to figure out what had
happened and discovered that because of an internal thrust, the gas
inside made the tube fly at great speed."
Hero scientist with the family in Şebinkarahisar.
Based on this discovery, Turkar worked for two years to get a
patent for his space ship. He said that "two weeks ago the Patent
Institute approved the invention and said there was no other like
it in the world. I proved that Turks can invent things."
As opposed to other rockets, Turkar's can reach into space without
a great number of fuel tanks and moves thanks to the internal thrust.
Also, it can find its path without the need of wings, speed up in
space and land back on Earth easily and without risk.
Şebinkarahisar district is in southwestern Giresun province.

Everyone's personal electric company.
Manoj Bhargava, the CEO of Living Essentials company, says
his company has developed a bicycle that can produce enough
electricity by peddling for one hour to light a house, run a fan
and charge phones and tablets for 24 hours. The device is called
"Free Electric" and it was developed from normal bicycle parts.
Any bicycle repairman can fix it, too.
Next month 25 of the cycles will be distributed to villages in
Utter Pradeş state of India and the plan is to have 10,000 of
the cycles in use throughout Indıa by the third quarter of this
year. The price is based on the consumer's ability to pay and
ranges from 250 to 1,200 USD.
