(Hürriyet Newspaper, 31 October 2021)

Only the "seçkin" can wave back.

Microsoft's Bill Gates and Amazon's Jeff Bezos, two of the world's five
richest people, have been separately touring around the Turkish Aegean
coast since the middle of the week in their superyachts - Gates in his
"Lana" around Fethiye and Bezos in his "Flying Fox" around the Gulf
of Gökova.

The two billionaires came together for Gates's 28 October birthday party
at Büyük Boncuklu Bay in Fethiye held a day early on Wednesday. Bezos
flew in on a helicopter for the party at a private beach, where 50 "seçkin"
(select, choice, distinguished, outstanding, superior!) individuals joined
in the festivities.

Bezos arrived on Gates's 107-meter yacht via helicopter from Gökova,
after which the two went by high-speed boat to the private beach that
had been closed off earlier for the birthday party.  Workers were barred
from using their telephones and strict security measures were implemented.

"Beat & Release": Never Accept a Taxi Ride from a 'Vulture'

(Milliyet Newspaper, 29 October 2021)

                                   Birdbrain of prey.

In Kocaeli, Ali Akbaba (50, and whose surname means 'vulture') shot
and killed Seyhan Gözer (44) in a taxi because Seyhan hanım wanted to
break up with him.  Akbaba delivered himself and Seyhan hanım's body
to the police station by means of the same taxi.

Yesterday morning in Kocaeli's Gölcük district, Akbaba saw Seyhan
hanım waiting for her morning ride to work and offered to take her in
a taxi.  Seyhan hanım accepted the offer but as the taxi ride ensued the
two argued and Seyhan hanım reiterated that she wanted to break up
with Akbaba.  When the taxi reached Seyhan hanım's workplace,
Akbaba told the driver to keep on going.

Queue at the taxi stand near Ali bey's house.

In the Saraylı neighborhood, Akbaba took out a gun and shot Seyhan
hanım in the head.  Taxi driver Süleyman Yılgın wanted to take the
injured woman to a hospital but Akbaba put the gun to his head and
said "If she dies, she dies.  Take us to the police station."  Once there,
Akbaba explained what had happened and turned himself into the
police.  Seyhan hanım's body, still in the taxi, was taken to the morgue.

Taxi driver Yılgın had this to say: "The woman would probably have
lived if we'd got her to a hospital.  He wanted to shoot her a second time
but his gun jammed.  He was probably going to kill himself, and me too."

passengers ensued and Sarıtaş was forced to get off the bus.

However (!), Sarıtaş went home, picked up a gun, caught up with
the bus by means of another vehicle and re-boarded.  Sarıtaş then
pulled out his gun and fired twice at Recep Ceylan (25), with whom
he had earlier argued.  The rest of the passengers fled the bus in a

TNT Road Rage Edition: "The Scream"...and the Bizarre Aftermath, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article & "The Scream"

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 26 October 2021)

              Drama queen's Oscar-caliber performance.

In Istanbul on 1 November 2018, Özlem Atan Tarlacı, an academician at
Haliç Univerisity, was stopped by police for chatting on her phone and
not wearing her seatbelt while driving along the Golden Horn shore in
the Balat neighborhood of Fatih district.  Police then noticed that Özlem
hanım's car lacked an updated inspection sticker.

But when police wrote a ticket for these infractions, Özlem hanım had a
screaming fit that lasted for some minutes (see video at "türkçe" above).
Policeman A.K. took a video of Özlem hanım's "performance".  She was
fined a total of 578 TL and her car was banned from the streets.

                         The resemblance is uncanny.

About a month after the incident occurred, "The Scream" audio-video was
provided to the press and posted on social media.  This prompted Özlem
hanım to file a criminal complaint, alleging damage to her prestige.  The
subsequent investigation resulted in charges being brought against
policeman A.K., who took the video, policeman O.K., who shared it with
a 52-member traffic police WhatsApp group, and M.G.H., who posted
the video on Instagram, for "exposing video and audio related to one's
personal life."

Policemen A.K. and O.K. explained that their collar cameras weren't
charged so they had to use their personal cellphones to take the video
for evidence purposes and shared it with the traffic police WhatsApp
group with this same evidentiary aim in mind.  They were both acquitted
by the court.

As for M.G.H., he claimed that he got the video from another website
but it was determined that the video had not been posted anywhere else
on the internet before M.G.H. posted it.  The court found him guilty of
"exposing video and audio related to one's personal life" and sentenced
him to 2 years and 1 month in jail. (!)

Social Media Battleground Casualties Keep Mounting

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 25 October 2021)

                                  Smile now, sue later.

Dubbing artist and writer Oya Pervin Pelit requested jail time for actress
Elif Fatma Baysal (67), whom Pelit accused of violating a 2-month
restraining order and of threatening and insulting her and her family.  The
court agreed and ordered that Baysal be jailed for three days.

According to a protection suit filed in Istanbul Family Court, Baysal
posted threatening and insulting messages on her social media account
targeting Pelit, who claimed that as a result she and her family were in
danger from Baysal.  The court approved a 2-month restraining order
against Baysal, who did not desist.

In one posting, Baysal said of Pelit: "what a dishonorable, styleless,
no-good person you are! Followers of my page are astonished that
you are still out and about.  Bury your head in the sand and prove
you're a human being. You are shameless, brazen-faced!  You are one
of society's black sheep.  I'm ashamed of the years I worked with you!"

"You denied your debt, swallowed my hard-earned money.  When I
gave you the money I was an angel for you but afterwards...now I have
to tell people who you really are.  I'm after you! Like Azrail (angel of
death)."

Based on Pelit's legal complaint about this posting, the court ruled that
Baysal would spend three days in jail.  Objecting to this, Baysal, who
makes a living as an actress in 'dizi' (TV soap opera) programs, said
"despite giving some of my hard-earned money to the plaintiff as a
loan, she has so far ignored my repayment requests.  The court has
deemed my postings as insults. If I have to go to jail then my 'dizi'
work will be negatively affected and cause me financial and spiritual
distress.  Additionally, in light of my lung cancer and hypertension
illnesses, I request that this jail sentence be voided."

Nevertheless, the court rejected Baysal's plea and ruled that the 3-day
jail term would be enforced.

A load of  tomato paste that fell off a TIR (tractor-trailer) at Yeniköy, the
15-kilometer point along the Balıkesir-Bursa highway, caused an 18-car
chain-reaction accident that resulted in 1 dead and 10 people injured.

The TIR, bearing license plate 10 AGD 046, was driven by C.U. (55),
who fled the scene following the accident.  Soon after, C.U. was taken
into custody by the Gendarmerie.

One of the drivers victimized by the accident was Hayri Turoğlu. He told
reporters that "I was driving at about 65-70 kpm when a bunch of cars
crashed into each other. I stopped but another TIR hit me from behind.
My car "pert oldu" (suffered serious damage).  Anyway, I tried to help
the other drivers.  If the TIR driver that caused the accident hadn't fled,
he could have stopped traffic and this tragedy would have been avoided.
I hear that he's been taken into custody by the security forces."

"Beat & Release": The Shadow Knows...Who Ankara Killers Are

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 22 October 2021)

                          Shadowboxing gets too real.

On 16 October, police in Ankara got word of a person injured in a
beating on Gökalp Avenue in Çankaya district.  Arriving at the scene,
police found no one.  Meanwhile, Özlem Gürgen, having heard no
word from her older brother Uğur Güzel (33) for two days, went to
his home on 18 October and had a locksmith open the door.

Özlem hanım found her brother passed out on the floor.  He was taken
to a hospital but could not be saved.  The initial medical examination
revealed that Güzel's nose had been broken by a heavy blow and the
bleeding in his brain caused his death.

Thinking that the report they received two days earlier about a
beating might be related to Güzel's death, police began to investigate.
Reviewing security camera footage, police saw the shadows of a group
of people beating an individual on the ground.  Other video showed four
individuals getting into a taxi nearby and police were able to determine
their identities by means of a facial recognition system.

Ankara policeman Ahmet Gölgeoğlu cracked his namesake
case.

Yunus Emre Sözcü (27) and Ersin Demir (29) were taken into custody,
along with their girlfriends E.K. (29) and N.K. (19).  In her statement to
police, E.K. explained that when she asked Güzel where the bus stops
were located, he cursed at her.  This prompted Demir to say to Güzel
"watch your language!" and he head-butted Güzel.  Then Sözcü kicked
Güzel lying on the ground.

Sözcü and Demir asserted to police that they beat Güzel because he
cursed at their girlfriends and admitted their guilt.  They were both
jailed, while E.K. and N.K. were released after giving their statements
to police.

"Accidental Hunters", In More Ways Than One

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 19 October 2021)

                      Roadkill? Accidents happen, they say.

Last Saturday at the Sevindikli location on the North Marmara highway
in Kocaeli, a small truck driven by İ.Ç. crashed into the back of a TIR
(tractor trailer) cab, without a trailer, driven by Nihat Öz.  Both İ.Ç. and
his passenger Ö.T. were hospitalized with their injuries.

Gendarmerie troops arriving at the scene noticed dead red deer in the
trunk of the small truck and alerted the Nature Defense and Parks
Regional Directorate, whose officials arrived and found a large number
of bullets that they assumed had been used in hunting the deer.

However (!), in their statements to the Gendarmerie İ.Ç. and Ö.T.
declared that they had not shot the deer, having "coincidentally" found
them by the side of the road, already dead. (!)  Nevertheless, the
"accidental hunters" both had hunting licenses but not permission to hunt
the deer.  İ.Ç. and Ö.T. were each given sanction fines of between 1,730
TL and 8,692 TL and administrative damages fines of 35,000 TL.

Veterinarian Blackmail'ed by a Wicked "Fairy"

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 18 October 2021)

Bewitching, but may have dental problems.

According to an investigation being handled by the Izmir public
prosecutor, a blackmail incident occurred at a hotel in Pendik,
Istanbul, in August of this year.  The story began last March when
veterinarian E.S. received a call from "Peri" (fairy), a.k.a. Nurper E.,
who said she was seeking aid for handicapped children on behalf of
the Bilinpa Danışmanlık company and asked E.S. if he would like to
buy theater tickets to support the cause.

E.S. then sent 300 TL (about $30) to the company's bank account
but he received a call from another woman a few days later who
claimed to be from the same company.  In all, E.S. ended up sending
5,000 TL to the account.   Next, after the Izmir earthquake, Nurper
hanım called E.S. again, asking for an aid contribution.

After they chatted, E.S. noticed that Nurper hanım had changed her
profile photo on WhatsApp.  E.S. sent a message to  Nurper hanım,
writing  "your profile picture is nice.  If I was younger I'd like to take
a chance with you."  In response, Nurper hanım wrote "what's stopping
you?"  E.S. explained that he is married and 25 years older than Nurper
hanım, who said in reply that the age difference was no obstacle. (!)

As events proceeded, Nurper hanım kept asking E.S. for more money
for various reasons: to start a business, buy a car, get a filing in her
tooth (!).  Each time E.S. responded by sending her money.  Then,
Nurper hanım asked E.S. for money for a new cellphone, telling E.S.
"let's buy it with your credit card and I'll pay the monthly payments."
So, she bought two new cellphones for herself, each one costing
16,300 TL, and some jewelry, promising E.S. that she would repay him.

In making the accusation of blackmail, E.S. submitted records showing
that he sent 170,000 TL to Nurper hanım's bank account.  The basis of
the blackmail, though, involved E.S. and Nurper hanım meeting in a
hotel room in Pendik, Istanbul, in August, when Nurper hanım secretly
recorded their tryst.  At 3 o'clock in the morning, Nurper hanım was
called by "her aunt" so she went to the hotel lobby and subsequently
sent E.S. a message, which included the video she took of their tryst. (!)

In her message to E.S., Nurper hanım wrote that "I'm going to buy an
electric car for my sibling. Send me your credit card information."
E.S. demurred but Nurper hanım doubled down, telling him that she
would put the damning video on the internet.  E.S. declared that "this
is blackmail!" but Nurper hanım was unmoved, telling E.S. "send me
100,000 TL and I'll erase the video. Otherwise, your children will be
watching you on YouTube."  E.S. again refused, so minutes later Nurper
hanım posted the video and E.S.'s telephone number on an Instagram
account she opened.

               Handicapped Kids' fairy godfather Canbay.

As the consequence of all this, E.S. filed a criminal complaint against
Nurper hanım with the Izmir public prosecutor.  Hürriyet called Nurper
hanım for a comment but she declined to make one.  Hürriyet also
contacted Murat Canbay, who owns the Bilinpa Danışmanlık company.
Canbay said that he owns a call center that organizes theater plays on
behalf  of handicapped children but he refused to confirm whether or not
the company has permission to collect contributions.  Neither would
Canbay explain what the money that people like E.S. send is used for,
saying only that "we're organizing aid with a theater company."  But
there is no such theater company active. (!)

"Steal & Release": Taxi Given or Stolen? Alternate Realities Compete, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 17 October 2021)

                                                 "What?"

According to taxi driver Murat Atabey, last Tuesday at 5 o'clock in the
morning he picked up a passenger in his taxi, bearing license plate
34 THA 05, in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul.  The passenger said he wanted to
go to a TIR (tractor-trailer) garage in Çatalca to see his father.  As the
taxi approached the TIR garage, Atabey stopped for a bathroom break
but when he came back the passenger had taken his taxi. (!)

Atabey informed the police and also a WhatsApp group of his fellow
taxi drivers.  The day before yesterday, another taxi driver noticed
Atabey's stolen taxi in Ambarlı in Avcılar district.  Police arrived but
the driver of the taxi tried to flee so the police fired at the vehicle's tires
to make it stop.

The driver of the stolen taxi turned out to be Abdülsamet Karata, who
has a record of 46 crimes and is being sought on narcotics charges.
Atabey had this to say: "I picked him up as a passenger in Beykikdüzü.
He stole my taxi and picked up passengers, while also selling drugs.
He swindled those he picked up. He had a record of more than 40 crimes.
He put a "shoot me" sticker on my taxi and the police shot at that.
I wish they had shot him and we'd all be rid of him."

Karata was released by police and is free until his trial. (!)  He had this
to say about the incident: "I know Murat Atabey from before.  On that
day my wife and I went to see him at his house in the Gazi neighborhood.
At his house, he told me he was looking for a driver and asked me if I
would be interested.  I agreed and at 11 o'clock that night my wife and I
left his house.  He gave us a lift home but on the way someone called him
and Murat said to him 'where are you? Come here and let's hang around
together.'"

"At that point, Murat gave me the taxi, saying 'since you're going to
drive it for me anyway, I'll leave it with you.'  I took the wheel and let
him off on Menekşe street in Büyükçekmece.  I don't know what he
did after that. The first day I drove the taxi Murat didn't call me at all.
The next evening he called and said 'you stole my taxi!'  In response,
I said 'I didn't steal it, you gave it to me!'  Then he said 'bring the car to
me and we'll have soup together.'  As I was about to bring the car to him
the police caught me.  I'd had a few drinks so I got scared and fled."

"Beat & Release": Devilish Facebook Ruse Scalps Barber in Kadıköy

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 14 October 2021)

Facebook friends can turn out to be foes.

Barber Kamuran Tün (42), who had an affair with a married woman in
Silopi district of Şırnak province twenty years ago, fled out of fear to
Istanbul and became a barber with his own shop in Kadıköy.  Meanwhile,
back in Şırnak, Murat Tumuçin (21) learned from his father Hacı Tumuçin
that Tün was the reason that his parents' marriage broke up.

So Murat Tumuçin set out to find and kill Tün, coming with his father to
Istanbul for that purpose.  However, Tün's Istanbul address was hard to
find so the Tumuçins came up with a devilish plan.  Murat "friended"
Tün on Facebook under the guise of being a woman named "Züleyha",
who told Tün that "she" wanted to become a hairdresser.

Tün got interested and gave "Züleyha" his phone number.  But Murat
needed to find a real woman to call Tün so he got in touch with a friend
of a relative in Tekirdağ named Duygu Asker Hilal, telling Duygu hanım
that "Kamuran Tün owes me money.  If you find where he is I'll give you
some of the money."

Sloppy killers from Silopi, with Tekirdağ's Duygu hanım,
trailing.

Duygu hanım then called Tün, telling him she wanted to come and see him.
So Tün gave her his address (!) and on 12 October Hacı Tumuçin and
Selçuk Başboğa went to Tekirdağ, picked up Duygu hanım and brought
her to Kadıköy to meet with Tün.  After coffee at a restaurant, when Tün
came out onto the street he was stabbed and killed by Murat Tumuçin and
his relatives.

The attackers fled but were rounded up by police.  Murat and Hacı Tumuçin
were jailed and Selçuk Başboğa and Duygu hanım were released on
judicial supervision.

According to a file in Istanbul's family court, Bağdat Polat and Metin
Polat married in 2003 and had two children.  But Bağdat hanım claims
that their lives changed completely five years ago when Metin bey
joined the "World Brotherhood Union Mevlana Yüce Foundation"
(WBUMYF) and devoted all his time and attention to it, at the expense
of his family.

Bağdat hanım said that her husband told her that he holds the "Knowledge
Book" of the foundation to be more sacred than the Koran and that it
relates to "out-of-this-world cosmic energies".  When Bağdat hanım asked
Metin bey to leave the association, he said to her "even if I die, I won't
leave it!"

Bağdat hanım said that her husband tried to convince her of "baseless,
ridiculous things" and that when she rejected them he choked her in front
of their children.  She added that he goes to meetings three times a week
for more than 5 hours each time.  Consequently, Bağdat hanım wants a
divorce, with two million TL in compensation for spousal neglect and
psychological stress, along with 5,000 TL per month for herself and 8,000
TL per month for the children, as alimony.

In response, Metin bey rejected Bağdat hanım's claims about him, noting
that the WBUMYF is legal, adding that "my wife took seriously some
things that I said jokingly. I used to make a lot of money in business but
now I make very little, so I reject her compensation and alimony demands."

Her motto is "Shaikh 'Em Up!"

As for the WBUMYF, it was founded by Bülent Çorak, now 98-years-old,
in 1966.  Known as "the woman shaikh", Bülent hanım claims that the
Mevlana came back to the world in her body and that she is reincarnated
all the time and will never die.

Medical operations for WBUMYF members are forbidden, since the
anesthesia will "disperse their energies" and "another spirit might enter
their bodies during the operation".  Bülent hanım claims that when she
needed an operation, three beings in diving suits came from outer space
to cure her. (!)

Fake Doctor's "Beauty Factory" Mishap Rectified 9 Years Later, in Istanbul

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 12 October 2021)

Factory-recall hindered by 9-year lack of spare parts.

Banu Mülhim prepared a fake diploma from Istanbul's Cerrahpaşa
Medical School for herself and in 2013 she opened a beauty center in
Bakırköy under the name "Beauty Factory"(!).  Patient Kıymet Kaya,
thinking Mülhim was a real doctor, went to the "Factory" and wanted
to have fat removed from her midsection.  After administering general
anesthesia, Mülhim then injected the fat removed from Kaya's stomach
into her patient's face. (!)

Kaya awoke in great pain and didn't even recognize herself when she
looked in the mirror.  Her face was puffed up and black and blue all
over.  The following day, pus began to flow from her facial wounds.
Learning that her face could not be repaired (by the "Factory"!), Kaya
filed a criminal complaint against Mülhim.  This led to Mülhim being
exposed as a fake doctor and the public prosecutor opened a case
against her for fraud and neglectful harming, demanding a one-year
jail sentence.

Factory warranty (with a big loophole).

In court in Bakırköy, Mülhim claimed that she had been slandered and
when the court found the evidence against her to be insufficient, Mülhim
was acquitted.  Kaya then filed an objection.  Another court in Bakırköy
re-tried the case and, upon the instructions of a court in Tekirdağ, Mülhim
gave a statement asserting that the damage to Kaya's face was certainly
not the result of her procedures.

For her part, Kaya declared that "I'm still getting treatment for the things

(Hürriyet Newspaper, 10 October 2021)

One of the latest additions to historic tourism in Turkey is the coliseum
discovered at Mastaura Antique City in Aydın's Nazilli district.  Experts
say that this coliseum is an architectural twin of the Coliseum in Rome -
100-meter diameter and 30-meters high, atop 32 vaults.

By next Spring, all of the lines of the structure will be exposed.  The
Nazilli municipality, the provincial tourism directorate, and Adnan
Menderes University have begun efforts to make this discovery available
to the public.  The experts noted that this coliseum is unique not only in
the region, but in the rest of Anatolia and Greece, as well.

The coliseum was the scene of gladiator games during the time of the
East Roman, or Byzantine, Empire, and gladiators came from all parts
of the empire to compete here.  While the Coliseum in Rome had a
capacity of 50,000 spectators, the one at Mastaura's capacity has been
estimated to have been able to hold 20,000 people.

Nazilli Mayor Kürşat Engin Özcan stated that "the one remaining arena
left standing in the world is here.  When we offer it for tourism we will
be adding yet another of our area's cultural richness to the world."
Archeologists say that since this coliseum has been covered completely
by soil it has remained intact.
