The seasonal excavations have begun at the Üçağızlı Cave in
Samandağ district of Hatay province, where it is thought that
modern humans lived between 41,000 and 15,000 B.C. The
cave is on the Mediterranean shore and can be reached only
after an arduous 40-minute trek.
Ankara University's Dr. Erksin Güleç explained that "Üçağızlı
Cave is very important from the standpoint of the lives of
ancient humans and the history of Antakya (Hatay). Modern
humans and Neanderthals lived here between 41,000 and 15,000
years before Christ. An upper jaw and 18 teeth have been found
and DNA testing is underway. The DNA will tell us whether
the community was different from others or not."
Güleç stated that the region was a stopping point for people
migrating north from Africa and that this cave was a gateway to
Anatolia, Europe and Asia. He added that "we have found lots
of beads and items made from stones here. Most of them are on
display in the Hatay Museum. Each year we try to do about 8
openings and each day we descend at least 8 centimeters deeper.
Excavation of the cave will last 30 years."
