Roman sports facility uncovered. Lot owner beams with pride.
There is an interesting story behind the emergence last month of a sports
facility dating from the Roman period in the Ladik quarter of Sarayönü
district in Konya. Cemal Kalender decided about two months ago to
build something on his 373-square meter lot but since it was in a 3rd
degree SIT (protected) area he had to do some drilling first.
About 10 centimeters before reaching the required drilling depth of 2 meters,
the workers encountered stone. The Konya Museums Directorate was
summoned to the site and a team from the museum determined that the
workers had found a sports facility from the Roman period. Kalender was
happy to hear this, from the standpoint of the potential contribution to
Turkey's tourism industry.
In any case, the Ladik neighborhood gets its name from the Laodikaya
antique city (in nearby Denizli province) and when the geometric-designed
mosaic appeared from the excavation Kalender was quite proud. After
finding the mosaic, the museum team also found columns, bases and a grave.
On the mosaic the words "Built in the name of Dökumanos's son Ergenus"
were found.
