Deep-fried fish that never die.
The mystery surrounding how and from where the fish that live in
a fountain called "balıklı göze" in Şebinkarahisar district of Giresun
province remains unsolved. The local people believe that anyone
who eats those fish will suffer all sorts of calamities and that the
three fish in the fountain never increase or decrease in number.
Mayor Şahin Yılancı, who was born in İkioğul village, explained
the legend, saying "according to an old wives tale, there was a
stingy man whose wife and daughter-in-law were generous. When
the women distributed bread to their neighbors the man threw them
both into an oven. In an instant, the oven turned into a boiling
water spring and the women turned into fish. The daughter-in-law
was pregnant so that's why there is third fish but it's seldom seen."
Freely admits that he needs all the help he can get.
Canan Aktuna, who said she had witnessed many strange incidents
in the garden of the house her grandfather left her, noted that anyone
who eats one of the fish would suffer untold disasters. She went on
to say that "in my childhood there were so many people making
wishes here that fishermen couldn't get past them. The fish live
inside a spring of boiling water within an oven-shaped rock. For
as long as I can remember there were two fish and once in a while
a third was seen. But there was never a time when there were more
or less fish. One time, a citizen put in a pipe to draw water to his
house and he ate a fish that got stuck in the pipe. But he suffered
every kind of calamity after that. Nevertheless, the number of
fish in the spring doesn't ever change."
