Saddam...what's in a name?...
In Antalya's Konyaaltı district, the neighborhood was rocked by a
massacre in a restaurant yesterday. Saddam Korkmaz (26), who had
worked at the restaurant as a delivery man for the past 5 years, was
fired two days ago. Yesterday morning, Korkmaz came to the
restaurant with a rifle hidden under his jacket and first shot owner
Gani Kocabaş (50) and then waiter Şenol Öztaş, both in the head.
Korkmaz then tussled with food engineer Gizem Ege (30), who
tried to stop him, and shot her in the head, as well. The remaining
restaurant workers hid themselves in the freezer and when Korkmaz
couldn't find them he committed suicide with the same weapon. Gizem
Ege had only started working at the restaurant two months ago, after
looking for a job for 3 years.
Incident may defy the saying "there's no such thing as bad
publicity."
Police determined that Korkmaz was married and had one child. He
was originally from Muş in eastern Turkey and had been investigated
in 2011 for ties to the PKK. Because of his bad behavior and traffic
fines, Kormaz had argued with his boss Kocabaş and threatened to kill
him. The rifle used in the massacre was purchased by Korkmaz via the
internet. He took the rifle out of its packaging in the restaurant garden,
loaded the bullets, hid it under his jacket and entered the restaurant.
