Road under discussion is at top in red from Alinda
(today's Karpuzlu) to Lake Bafa, site of Herakleia.
A 4-kilometer section of the 2,300-year-old antique stone road
that links Alinda Antique City with Herakleia (Latmos) Antique
City in the Beşparmak (Latmos) Mountains in Aydın's Söke
district has been destroyed by villagers using bulldozers to open
paths to their olive gardens.
Members of the Ecosystem Protection and Nature Lovers
Association (EKODOSD) complained about the situation and
Haydar Coşar, a environmental engineer, Süleyman Özgen,
an archeologist, both from the Aydın Cultural Heritage Protection
Regional Council, along with Songül Erbay, an archeologist at
the Aydın Archeology Museum, went to the site to make an
investigation.
Olives can't wait another 2,300 years.
As a result, an effort has begun to ensure the road, which has
been measured and its coordinates taken by EKODOSD, is
protected henceforth. EKODOSD chief Bahattin Sürücü
explained that the road was built by the founder of Heraklei
City, Pleistarkhos, at great expense. He lamented that "it is
very sad that this road, which has lasted up to now and is
still used by trekkers, has been destroyed in the past six
months. Ancient stone roads are an important piece of our
cultural heritage and we all must protect them. The right
kind of a project would be good for Aydın's tourism sector,
as well."
