Shirtless hero-mayor Çalışkan takes a breather afterwards.
In Karaman, a decorative pool is under construction at the Turkish
World Culture Capital Park. The park is not yet open to the public
but yesterday Davut Şimşek (15) came to the park with his friends
and jumped in the pool. As Davut headed toward the 2.5-meter-
deep center of the pool he began to flail about and sink.
Coincidentally, Karaman Mayor Ertuğrul Çalışkan was at the park
on an inspection tour and, hearing the sirens, he rushed to the pool,
took off his clothes and dove in the pool, retrieving Davut from
the water. Although Davut's heart had stopped (!), first responders
revived him and brought him to the intensive care unit of a hospital.
Mayor Çalışkan spoke with the boy's family at the hospital and
told them that Davut had been underwater for 10 minutes. He
said to reporters "God willing, Davut will recover quickly. Our
park will open at the end of June. Even though we closed off the
entrances because of the continuing work, they found a way to
get in. We ask the public not to enter the park until all the work
is completed."
