The medium is the (nice) message.
American Alexandra R. wrote "Love Everything" in graffiti on
the wall at the metro station in Beyoğlu one night in 2016. The
security guard who saw this processed a complaint against
Alexandra R. and she was charged with "causing damage to
public property", which carries a jail sentence of from 1 to 4 years.
In her statement to police, Alexandra R. asserted that "I used to
do this kind of graffiti in America. It's not prohibited. When I
came to Turkey I saw graffiti all over the place. If I thought it
was a crime I wouldn't have done it."
At the second hearing of the case Alexandra R.'s lawyer Gülnur
Karabulak was present but no lawyer from the Metro authority
came. Alexandra R. was acquitted.
Opening soon in Beyoğlu.
