"Trees make me nervous. Let's cut 'em down."
This time the thieves at the mosque didn't steal shoes or rugs. This
time 4 individuals cut down 31 pine trees in the mosque's garden
and made off with them (!). The incident occurred last Friday
evening at the Serdivan Zaim Güllü Mosque in Sakarya. While the
congregation was inside the mosque for evening prayers, the four
bearded tree-robbers went to work with their axes.
The 31 pine trees were each 2.5-3-meters high were felled in 12
minutes and loaded onto a truck parked in front of the mosque.
Ruhi Cinak, the head of the mosque's knowledge and services
association, related that "two of them cut down the trees, one of
them carried them and the other loaded them on the truck. Anyone
who would do such a thing would murder a person or cut a tree down.
No normal person would do this. We're saddened and angry. We
planted the trees when they were little and watered them over 4.5
years. We'll plant new ones but they may cut those down."
One could understand if it was Christmas time, perhaps.
Police are investigating.
Sakarya city is also known as Adapazarı.
