Diggin' the scene.
Excavations at Teion Antique City, thought to have been inhabited
from the 6th century B.C. to the 13th century A.D., are continuing
for the 12th year in Filyos town of Çaycuma district, Zonguldak.
The digging goes on with pickaxes, shovels, hoes and brushes, as
the archeological students press on with their work.
The excavation of Teion began in 2006 in a 60-hectare (60 x 2.5
acres) area and in the 11 years since finds from various eras of history
have included written works, a hamam (bath), a church, a temple,
a port, a fortress and sea walls, remains of a breakwater, an antique
theater, metal items and ceramics. Last year, 8 sunken ships from
the Roman, Byzantine and Selçuk periods were found under water.
Dr. Şahin Yıldırım of Bartın University is leading the dig this year
and he has a team of 50 made up of students, workers and experts.
The diggers work in temperatures beyond 30 degrees for 12 hours
each day. Dr. Yıldırım noted that they have found the remains of
a chateau used by the Genovese. He added that work is now
focused on the upper level of the antique city and the acropolis
there.
He added that "this peninsula has a 3,000-year history stretching
from its days as a colony, to the Persian era, the time of Alexander
the Great, Byzantium, the Genovese traders and the Selçuks."
Dr. Yıldırım noted that last year significant findings emerged from
underwater excavations pointing to Filyos's status as an important
trade center in times past. He said that underwater work will resume
in August.
Filyos-Teion-Tios is between Bartın and Zonguldak on
the Black Sea coast.
