Excavations at the site of metro construction in Beşiktaş, Istanbul, have
uncovered a large number of 'kurgan' (tombs) like those used by Turks
during the Bronze Age, putting the theory that Turks migrated here at
that time on the agenda. When the tombs were first found, experts
dated them to around 1200-1100 B.C., the First Iron Age, but now
that the tombs have been opened the date has been pushed back to the
First Bronze Age (3500-3000 B.C.).
Although the experts say it is still too soon to assert that the findings
are from ancient Turks, as the excavation continues this theory is
gaining strength. Intense research is now focused on determining how
the steppe culture of Central Asia might have come to Beşiktaş - via the
Balkans or via Anatolia toward the Balkans? Carbon-14 dating work
and DNA analysis will help to narrow the focus on an answer.
The metro may not run on time...but does it ever?
In tomb number 25, out of the 69 discovered so far, at Beşiktaş two
small statues were found in recent days, one bigger than the other,
lying toe to toe but opposite each other in the grave. The statues have
human form with lines carved into the bodies and symbols that may
depict branches or leaves. There are also what seem to be letters,
like those in the Uygur and Göktürk alphabet. The heads, though,
have no eyes or mouths, which other anthropomorphic figures found
in Anatolia have. Instead, these figures seem to relate to the ancient
Tripoli-Cucteni culture of present-day Moldova, Ukraine and
Romania.
