Turkey's Great White (uniforms) Fleet of One.
The Turkish frigate Gediz has returned from a world tour that took the
ship and its crew to 12 nations, 15 ports and logged 22,932 kilometers.
After completing its 116-day mission, the Gediz docked yesterday at
Aksaz Naval Base in Marmaris.
Theodore Roosevelt's Great White Fleet sailed around the
globe to exhibit American strength and prestige in 1908.
With its crew of 181, the Gediz left Aksaz on 6 April to participate in
NATO's SNMG-1 Permanent Mission Group, heading out into the
Atlantic Ocean via Gibraltar. Gediz's first operation was with the
JOİNT WARRIOR-2018 exercise, followed by participation in
BALTOPS-2018 in the Baltic Sea and DYNAMIC MONGOOSE-
2018 in the North Sea.
After these exercises, the Gediz headed off to represent the Turkish
Navy around the world, visiting the northern Danish port of Aalborg
and then crossing the Arctic Circle on 22 June at the 66th degree of
latitude. The Gediz made port at Norway's Harstad at the 70th degree
of latitude and in the course of its cruise visited the USA, Japan, the
northern fiords and the Cape of Good Hope.
