In Kocaeli, a father whose son was sent home from school for not
wearing the prescribed pants, could not bear the humiliation. The
distraught father said to his wife "If I can't look after my own
children, if I can't even buy my son a pair of pants, why am I living?"
He hung himself in his home's bathroom.
The incident occurred in Yukarı Hereke village of Körfez district,
Kocaeli province. İsmail Devrim (45) could not afford to buy the
required pants for his son, who attends Hereke Nuh Çimento Trades
High School. The boy, M.D. (14), went to school, where he is in
his first year, wearing other pants and was sent home, being
declared absent for the day.
Upon arriving back at home, M.D. explained the situation to his
parents. İsmail Devrim was extremely hurt by the turn of events
and on Thursday morning he was found dead in the bathroom.
Wife and mother Hafize Devrim related that "my son came home
from school. His face was sad so we asked what was the matter.
He told us that he was sent home for not wearing the required
school pants. My husband was very upset about this. He had
us go to bed early and the next morning I found him hung in
the bathroom."
Continuing, Hafize hanım, whose other child is in the last year
of high school, said that "the children have to wear the school
uniform. We bought the shirt but not the pants, thinking that
we could buy them later. My husband was very distraught by
this, though, and lamented that if he couldn't look after his own
children he would be better off dead."
İsmail Devrim had worked as a lathe operator at a nearby factory
but after a motorcycle accident, he could not work. Hafize
hanım explained that "his arm was injured in the accident and
afterwards he kept looking at his arm in the mirror, exasperated
that because of it he couldn't work. We are having money
problems and this house is indebted, complicating our situation."
İsmail Devrim's body was sent to his hometown in Balıkesir
province for burial.
Körfez district is on the north shore of the Gulf of
İzmit, which is Kocaeli's other name.
