Village chief Gültekin surveys the damage.
İmam Mehmet Özbay was appointed to the Işıklar
Mosque in Gölçük village in Aydın's Karpuzlu district 3
years ago. He lived in the mosque's 80-square-meter
residence that had been built by the villagers. Over the
past few weeks Özbay argued with his congregation so he
was transferred to another mosque in a village in nearby
Çine district.

demolition derby.
After Mehmet Ö. left his mosque residence he demolished
it with a sledgehammer (!). Village chief Yüksel Gültekin
reported the incident to the Gendarmerie and the district's
müftü (chief of imams). A bewildered Gültekin told
reporters that "this imam served in our village for 3 years
and we had him live in the residence that our villagers
built. For 3 years we asked for no rent and he paid none.
He wrecked the residence with a sledgehammer when he
left and he didn't turn over the accounts ledger either.
Because the residence is demolished a new imam can't
come here so there's no call to prayer or Friday prayers."
However (!), subsequently Özbay's son, also named
Mehmet Özbay, claimed it was he who demolished the
residence, while his father was in Çine. The younger
Özbay said he was regretful and ready to take his
punishment.
