God Bless St. Patrick! Me tummy aches!
Irish tourist Ian Camppel (54) went into a jewelry store in
Marmaris, Muğla province, as a customer but stole a
2.5 carat diamond ring worth $40,000 by swallowing it.
The ring has been recovered by means of a colonoscopy. (!)
Heading for unscheduled colonoscopy appt.
Last Wednesday around noon Camppel went into the
jewelry store on Kordon Avenue in Marmaris and asked
to look at rings. The jeweler took out two rings that
Camppel liked and explained the diamonds' characteristics,
showing him the certificates of authenticity, as well.
Ian's got a twinkle in his eye...
Taking advantage of the jeweler's momentary distraction,
Camppel put one of the rings in his pocket. He then told
the jeweler that he didn't like either ring and got up to
leave. However, the jeweler realized that one ring was
missing, detained Camppel and called the police.
Store video footage was reviewed and Camppel could be
seen putting the ring in his pocket. When the ring still
couldn't be found, though, it was assumed that Camppel
had swallowed it. Camppel was taken to Marmaris State
Hospital, where it was determined, after 4 ultrasound
exams, that the ring was in Camppel's intestine. After
waiting in vain for the ring to be expelled naturally,
a colonoscopy was performed to recover the ring.
Will my health insurance cover this?!
Camppel explained that he has been coming to Marmaris
for a week's vacation for the past 12 years. Seven years
ago Camppel retired from working after a work accident.
He lost his wife when her car plunged into a lake but
her wedding ring was not on her finger when the body
was eventually recovered. Camppel claimed that this
tragedy prompted his fixation with diamonds. (!)
