Stairway to heaven, in an unfortunate sense.
In Trabzon's Ortahisar district, in the past year 10 people
have jumped to their deaths from the roof of a building.
In an effort to prevent such suicides the building's owners
have put an iron fence on the stairway leading to the roof
with a sign that reads:
"Attempting Suicide is Dangerous and Forbidden (!)
In Spite of Everything, Life is Worth Living"
Pehlivan Karagüzel, who has taken care of the building
for 25 years, explained that "pained lovers, spousal
disputes, unemployment and debts lead people to this
roof. We put an iron fence on the stairway and locked
it but they still find a way to get to the roof. So this time
we added the warning sign and up to now it's worked."
Trabzon province. Ortahisar is in Trabzon city.

Jumper landed on the roof of the shopping center,
foreground, and thus his suicide was prevented.
The unbelievable incident occurred yesterday around
noon in Konya's Selçuklu district at a 42-story building
on Kule Avenue in the Feritpaşa neighborhood. A
20-year-old man jumped off the top floor of the building
and crashed onto the roof of the food court of an
adjacent shopping center.
Firefighters who were called to the scene broke through
the cardboard ceiling, lowered the man down to the floor
of the food court and put him on a stretcher. He was
taken to Konya Training and Research Hospital where
he is in serious condition.
Selçuklu district is part of Konya city.
