U.S. visa applicants in the waiting room at the
Embassy in Ankara.
CHP (opposition party) Parliamentarian Gürsel Tekin has
brought to the agenda scandalous questions encountered
by one of his relatives who went to the U.S. Embassy for
a visa. Tekin revealed the texts of 22 questions asked of
Turkish visa applicants at the U.S. Embassy and
Consulate.
Gürsel declared that "these questions are unbelievable!
They are very demeaning and I vigorously condemn
them. The Foreign Ministry should intervene right away.
It's shameful how we have been treated like a third-class
country in recent times."
Among the question that Gürsel found offensive were
these:
"Are you coming to the United States to participate in
prostitution or monetized immoral crimes, or have you
been involved in prostitution or activities that promote
prostitution in the past 10 years?"
"Have you previously been a member of a paramilitary
group, organization, guerrilla, resistance or revolutionary
group? Have you had training in nuclear and biologic
weapons? Have you engaged in money-laundering?"
"Do you intend to participate in espionage, sabotage,
export control evasion or other illegal activities in
the United States? Do you intend to engage in
terrorist activities in the United States?"
"Have you engaged in torture?"
Visa applicants wait their turn at the Istanbul
Consualte-General.
