The happy couple in their final resting place.
The skeletons of a man and a woman in a cemetery, uncovered in a
necropolis area from the Urartu period north of Çavuştepe Fortress
in Van province, have been determined to be 2,777 years old.
Prof. Dr. Rafet Çavuşoğlu of Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYU)
explained that the husband-wife skeletons were found during an
excavation last year.

An examination of the skeletons revealed that the male died first
and that the woman's body was placed on the male's arm in a
'hoker' position (legs pulled up toward her stomach and laid on
her side) subsequently. Dr. Çavuşoğlu explained that "we sent
samples from the skeletons to the USA for carbon-dating and
it was determined that they were buried 2,777 years ago, or
659-650 B.C., during the 2nd Rusa period of the Urartu kingdom.
The were important persons, judging from the seal on the male
and the jewelry on the skeletons."
Dr. Hakan Yılmaz of the YYU Anthropology Department stated
that the male was 34-40 years old and the female 25-30 years old.
Çavuştepe Fortress is in Gurpinar district of Van.
