His parents always called him a little rascal.
İbrahim Galip, the imam at the Erbaa Çarşı Mosque, has
characterized women in leadership roles in Erbaa, a district of
Tokat province, as 'münafık' (hypocrite - especially in religion,
tell-tale, backbiter, double-dealer). In particular, Galip singled
out Nurten Çamlıbel, the 'muhtar' (village/neighborhood chief)
of Erbaa's Cumhuriyet area, as a 'münafık'.
In response, Çamlıbel filed a criminal complaint against Galip,
who declared in his Friday sermon last week that "women cannot
be in charge because they're 'münafık'. When women are in charge
there can be no right path. Additionally, you chose a woman as
the 'muhtar' of Cumhuriyet and she is 'münafık'! There can be
nothing done with such a 'münafık' in charge!"
Galip did get support, though, from the club's HQS.
In her petition to the Erbaa public prosecutor and the district
'müftülük' (in charge of the district's imams), Çamlıbel asserted
that Galip had insulted and belittled not just her, but all Turkish
women. CHP (opposition party) Tokat Parliamentarian Kadim
Durmaz said in Parliament that "this individual (Galip) has insulted
the 647 women who are 'muhtar' nationwide and 40 million Turkish
women! Will the Ministry of Religious Affairs take the necessary
action against this person who denigrates our women?!"
