One wanted poster's as good as another. They all look
alike anyway...
In Bolu, the search continues for a bear thought to have killed an elderly
woman last July. In response to a petition by lawyer Dilruba Uslu
Koyuncu, the Ministry of Forests' 9th Region Directorate revealed that
a camera placed at the scene of the woman's death snapped a picture of
a 'mature' bear considered to be the prime suspect.
Based on hunting regulations that permit killing animals who threaten
human lives, an agreement has been signed with hunting associations
in the Bolu area. However, the hunters failed to find the bear in
question during searches conducted 18-30 September and 2-12
October.
Now you know what a bear does in the woods.
One of the hunting groups' leaders, Murat Yavuz, explained that
"officials came to us after the incident and we looked at the bear's
picture. Then we went looking for the bear but a fair amount of
time had passed. So we think the bear has either left the area or is
hibernating."

Safe and sound...
Storks coming from Africa spend summers in Europe and Turkey
for the 120-day incubation period of their eggs. Especially in villages
in Thrace, the birds make their nests in chimneys and on electrical
power poles, causing occasional electrocutions of the storks and
power outages.
This problem occurs in Poland, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria, as
well, and the solution has been to erect platforms for the storks to
use above the electrical poles. Now, this practice is being implemented
in Tekirdağ. Based on an agreement between the National Parks
Directorate and TREDAŞ (Thrace's electric utility), so far 70 such
platforms have been erected in villages around Thrace. The platforms
were prepared in accordance with standards set out by the Ege
University Natural History Implementation and Research Center.
...but still enabling to the population explosion.
Tekirdağ Parliamentarian Mustafa Yel noted that "since my childhood,
I've been fascinated by storks. When electricity began to come to
the villages the number of storks declined. So we made a request
to Minister Veysel Eroğlu (Minister for Forests and Water) and
that's how the 70 platforms came to be. We want such platforms to
be erected in all the villages in Thrace."
