Cheaters never prosper, but watch out for their collateral
damage.
Hasan İsmail Hikmet (23), a 4th-year law student at Çankaya University
in Ankara, shot and stabbed proctor Ceren Damar Şenel, who caught
him cheating on an exam. The incident happened yesterday evening
after the noontime exam on civil law, when Şenel, who was also
Hikmet's thesis advisor, caught him cheating and took his exam paper
away.
After the exam, Şenel went to her office and Hikmet went home.
However, he returned to the university at 5 pm with his ex-policeman
father's gun and a knife. Hikmet entered Şenel's office and first stabbed
her 8 times, before shooting her twice in the chest, killing her. Hikmet
fled but was caught by the police soon afterward near the university.
After the incident, all exams were canceled. Şenel had been married
a month ago and she and her new spouse were planning a honeymoon
during the upcoming semester break. One of her students lamented
that "Ceren Hoca was a wonderful friend to many students, always
ready to help us. She was very accomplished in labor law and was
working on her doctorate. We are saddened to have lost such a good-
hearted teacher."
