The fog that choked the Bosphorus for 3 days this week caused a
nightmare for shipping. All ferry crossings were canceled and tanker
traffic through the strait was paralyzed, with hundreds of ships
having to wait in the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara.
Smaller craft experienced problems with fuel, provisions and
water because of the extended wait and shipping companies
lost thousands of dollars by not being able to deliver their goods
on schedule.
Last year, too, 5 days of fog in the Bosphorus stranded 351 ships
on either side of the strait as they waited for passage
