The items will be sent to the NSA Cryptologic Museum in
Fort Meade, Md. USA for safekeeping.
Istanbul police identified an individual selling prohibited items
such as secret cameras and recording devices over the internet.
On 11 February, police raided an address in Sultangazi district
and seized 545 items of this ilk.
In suspect Y.T.'s internet pitch offering the items he declared that
"becoming a real secret agent is in your hands." The secret
cameras are disguised as cigarette lighters, pens, bracelets, flash
drives, car keys, buttons, eyeglasses, nail polish jars, watches,
air fresheners and ashtrays. Other items were fitted with recording,
tracking and bug-detecting devices. The street value of the items
was estimated at 400,000 TL (about $80,000).
Y.T. told police that he obtained the items from China via illegal
channels and that he sold them for between 80-850 TL. Police
explained that since the items seized could be used to "infringe
on the sanctity of personal life" they are banned for sale and
cannot be used without a court order.
