Aw shucks, twern't nothin'.
Canan Şengel (48) lives on the 4th floor of an 11-story apartment
building in Adana. The night before last, at 3 o'clock in the morning,
a fire broke out. Şengel woke up only because her cat Efe roused her
by pulling her hair with his paw (!) and she was able to scramble to
safety.
Firefighters could not reach the 4th floor because electrical lines
on the street blocked their ladder so they doused the fire by pulling
a water hose up with a rope, preventing the fire from spreading to
other flats on the 4th floor. The firefighters rescued 8.5-year-old Efe,
who was stranded in Şengel's burned-out flat. The fire was caused
by an electrical problem in the heating unit.

Homeless but safe, and they've still got each other.
In Bayraklı district of Izmir, a fire broke out in a two-story house
because of an electrical problem. At the last possible moment,
Leman Marmara (90), Ayfer Orbay (85) and Aşkın Orbay (82)
and their 5 cats (!) were rescued by firefighters and citizens.
Aşkın hanım watched sadly, with one of her cats in her arms, as the
fire was extinguished and her home turned to ashes. She said that
"my only consolation is that my cats were saved."
