Dentists were lined up at the maternity ward door...
In Istanbul, Özlem and Görkem Yüceer had a baby girl two weeks ago
but unlike other newborns their daughter Defne was born with two
lower teeth (!) surprising both the parents and the doctor. The teeth
will be extracted.
When she first heard about the teeth, Özlem hanım didn't believe it:
"I never heard of such a thing. They told me the teeth will be extracted
and that there's nothing to worry about. When I was 7 months pregnant
I saw in a dream that Defne would be born with teeth so when it
happened I recalled that dream."
Dr. Meriç Çağrı Ağır said this about the "natal teeth": "this is not
something we see every day. This is the second time I've encountered
it. According to statistics, it happens once in every 3,000 births. So
it was quite a surprise to see Defne born with teeth. It's not really a
problem but since these teeth aren't firmly bound to the bone they
may get loose and the baby might swallow them. The teeth could
also affect nursing, the tongue and the lips. That's why we think
it's best to extract them."
After extraction, Defne will have to be satisfied with
a prosthesis.
