"Hey kids, wanna make a little extra money?"
Syrian Ahmet Zına (32), who lives in Hatay, put an add on Facebook
to sell his kidney for $10,000 because of his poor financial situation.
Israeli Nimer Hayadrı (50) saw the add and got in contact with Zına.
The two then agreed to meet in Istanbul for the transplant operation,
to be performed by pediatrician (!) Hayri Gözlükgiller, who sometimes
appears on TV shows about child health and who works at a private
hospital in Istanbul.
Gözlükgiller met Zına and Hayadrı at the airport in Istanbul and asked
Hayadrı for $35,000 to do the operation, but took 8,000 Euros in cash
from Hayadrı instead. Gözlükgiller gave Hayadrı a signed receipt with
a seal on it in return for the money.
Hayadrı also paid $500 to have a fake Syrian passport made up for
Zına to make it appear that Zına was Hayadrı's relative. Gözükgiller,
though, felt this arrangement would cause problems so he advised
the other two to have a document prepared showing that they were
friends and that the transplant would be a voluntary gesture.
Meanwhile, the Istanbul police unit that combats human trafficking
and illegal migrants got a tip about the transplant. On 21 June, the
police went to Gözükgiller's hospital and took Hayadrı, Zına,
interpreter Yusuf E. and Gözükgiller into custody, just as the transplant
operation was about to begin.
Police determined that the document given to the hospital for the
operation was fraudulent and they found the receipt Gözükgiller had
given Hayadrı for the 8,000 Euros on Gözükgiller, who claimed
that the money was for blood analysis and that he had given it to
his assistant.
All involved were taken before a judge and Gözlükgiller and Zına
were arrested. Nimer Hayadrı will be expelled from Turkey.
Efforts continue to determine the identity of the Palestinian who
directed Hayadrı to Gözlükgiller in the first place.
