In happier days...
Welcome to Saud...uh...Sapanca.
istanbul arabic signs click here for a recent story about
Istanbul cracking down on Arabic store signs.
Lately in Sapanca, 'rich Arabs' have started to buy luxury residences
worth over $1 million. One can see real estate signs in Arabic all
over Sakarya, which has Turkey's highest living standards and
lush greenery, as well. Local shopkeepers say they are happy with the
Arab influx to Sapanca, which is just two hours away from Istanbul.
But Turks are not buying in Sapanca because of the buyers from Qatar
and Saudi Arabia. And some of the new villas on the hills are in
danger of sliding because of the soft soil. Arabs don't like to bother
with bargaining and will buy, for example, 10 plasma TVs in one
fell swoop (!).
Camel-drawn carriages can't be far behind.
Arabs are also buying hazelnut orchards in Sapanca and turning them
into restaurants. There are many such places on the shore of Sapanca
Lake that have menus in Turkish and Arabic. In fact, there are signs
in Arabic all over Sapanca for parking lots, toilets, restaurants and
the local farmers market. Some shopkeepers have even started to
write their 'help wanted' signs in Arabic. Arab who don't want to walk
along the lake shore, take boat tours and horse-draw carriage rides.
Sapanca (B). Darıca is on the water, south of Gebze between
Sapanca and Istanbul.
