//Ed. note: As if the murder of Jamal Kashoggi last year
and the death of "White Helmets" founder and former
British intelligence agent Gustaf Edward Le Mesurier
earlier this week weren't enough to cement Istanbul's
reputation as a enter of foreign intrigue, add this one to
the pile.//
Round up the unusual suspects...
An Uighur Turk named Saimait Aierken (Samet Erkin), holding both
Chinese and Ukrainian citizenship, was gunned down in a hotel café in
the Çapa neighborhood of Fatih district, Istanbul on Sunday. Police
determined that Aierken worked in the customs business and was
experiencing financial difficulties.
The assailants were tracked to Adana, from where they hoped to
escape to Syria. Police arrested Kyrgyz citizens Hüseyin Ahmetaliyev
and Abdullah Enver, along with Syrian Ali Isbeh. The suspects claimed
they killed Aierken because of a money dispute in Kyrgyzstan. Press
reports in the Uzbek and Kyrgyz newspapers indicated that Aierken
was involved in an investigation concerning $700 million (!) taken out
of Kyrgyzstan illegally.
Herewith the unusual suspects, after round-up.
Subsequent reporting in the Turkish press stated that the suspects were
members of a terrorist group that broke off from El Nusra in İdlib
province, Syria, and were hired by their terrorist group's leader for
$1,000 to kill Aierken. The three came to Istanbul 2 weeks ago.
After their apprehension in Adana the suspects were brought back to
Istanbul. A search produced 6 cellphones, 13 fake ID cards (7 for men,
6 for women) given for temporary residence in Turkey to Syrian
refugees.
