The phrase "Appearance of Impropriety" is considered
blasphemy at NEU.
Appointments to positions at Necmettin Erbakan University (NEU)
in Konya have created some controversy. Prof. Cem Zorlu, who was
made president of the university in November 2018, established the
Türkiye İmam Hatipliler Vakfı (Turkey İmam Hatip (religious high
school graduates) Foundation/TİMAV) and made himself a member
of TİMAV's board of directors.
Zorlu, who between 2011 and 2015 was an AKP (ruling party)
member of the Turkish Parliament, made TİMAV board member
and theology professor Muhiddin Okumuşlar the deputy president
of NEU on 8 May 2019. Zorlu also appointed TİMAV board
member and theology professor Muhammet Tasa to head the NEU
foreign languages faculty.
In July 2019, Zorlu selected TİMAV board chairman Ecevit Öksüz
as the NEU general secretary and on 22 July Öksüz transferred to
this position from a Konya-based holding company where he had
been the 'Director for Institutional Communications'. Four days
later, Zorlu's son Süleyman Yasir Zorlu, a law faculty researcher at
Istanbul Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University, was appointed to
the board of directors of Öksüz's holding company. (!)
