Just expanding the basement a bit...
In Fatih district of Istanbul, Mehmet Ercan P. dug a 55-meter tunnel
from a store he acquired 3 months ago to a store which sells military
equipment. Mehmet Ercan P. was taken into custody. He explained
that he was making alterations to his store (!) but police suspect he
was looking for buried treasures.
The incident occurred in the Eminonu Mercan neighborhood. Mehmet
Ercan P. took possession of a store on Havanci Street that sells
handbags 3 months ago. But he taped newspapers to the store windows
and proceeded to dig the 55-meter tunnel, which ended in the celler of
a military equipment store on Uzun Carsi Avenue.
Workers at the military equipment store alerted police about the
tunnel and Mehmet Ercan P. was arrested. Store owner Nurettin
Sahin said that "it wasn't a robbery. We didn't hear any noise. I
think that because Fatih is a historical area the diggers were probably
looking for treasure." As for Mehmet Ercan P., he told police that
he was just trying to expand his store's basement space (!).
