Another abortion that didn't happen.
Two weeks ago in Adapazarı, 7-month pregnant F.A. was attacked on
the street by someone she assumed to be a purse-snatcher. However,
after grabbing F.A.'s purse, the assailant continued to beat her and then
threw the purse into a garbage can without taking any of its contents.
Police were suspicious of this chain of events and determined that it
was not a simple purse-snatching incident. They examined video from
a factory where F.A.'s former boyfriend Taner Oktay Kara works and
found that the person who beat F.A. and who was wearing a hooded
jacket to conceal his identity during the attack, was Kara's co-worker
Ümit Özpehlivan. In the workplace video Özpehlivan was still wearing
the same clothes after the incident.
Police took both Kara and Özpehlivan into custody. In his statement
to police, Kara admitted that he had pressured F.A. to have an abortion,
having learned of the baby after the two broke up. When F.A. refused,
Kara planned the attack, enlisting Özpehlivan to commit the mugging
for 35,000 TL (about $6,000). According to the plan, Özpehlivan was
supposed to beat F.A. to the extent that she would lose the baby (!).
Nevertheless, after the attack F.A. was said to be in good condition and
Kara and Özpehlivan were jailed.
