This money won't burn a hole in his pocket.
The 80 million TL (about $12 million) winnings for the New Year's
lottery were split among four ticket holders across Turkey. One of
those winning tickets was purchased in Bursa's İnegöl district.
While the district populace is wondering who their 20 million TL
neighbor is, an interesting side story has emerged. Esat Şahan, a local
furniture worker, had a ticket that was just one number off from the
winner, entitling him to 20,000 TL (about $2500).
However (!), declaring that the national lottery money is 'haram'
(dirty), Şahan burned his ticket (!). The 37-year-old father of one
child explained that "my kid was pestering me to by a ticket when
we were at the shopping center so I bought one to shut him up.
Then it turned out that my ticket was worth 20,000 TL. But since
it's dirty money I burned the ticket and I advise everyone to keep
dirty things out of your home."
İnegöl is just southeast of Bursa city.
