Showing off her manicure in Parliament.
CHP (opposition party) Parliamentarian Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi is also
the wife of Battal İlgezdi, the mayor of Ataşehir district of Istanbul.
When Gamze hanım didn't get the preferential treatment she expected
from a hairdresser in Ataşehir, her husband tried to have the shop
closed (again!). Hairdresser Emre Erçevik explained what happened,
as follows:
"Three of us opened the shop in 2011, at which time there was an
extra indoor balcony,. Nevertheless, we got a license to operate from
the municipality. Gamze hanım started coming to us in 2014 and there
was a similar incident then - Gamze hanım didn't want to wait, so
there was a problem with another customer she displaced. Soon
after, municipal officials came and closed us down, saying that the
indoor balcony was illegal. We got a court order to lift the ban
but we apologized to Gamze hanım and the mayor anyway to head
off further complications."
Collateral damage: staffers & owner Erçevik (blue jacket).
"Gamze hanım started coming to our shop again and we tried to
ensure that she got preferential treatment each time, in light of our
previous experience. Last year she came with her daughter without
a reservation. The manicurist took Gamze hanım ahead of a
customer with a reservation. We were reluctant to object but the
customer, Çağan Karal, did, saying to Gamze hanım 'your political
status means nothing to me.' Another CHP city council member
who was in the shop chimed in, chastising Gamze hanım for behavior
unbecoming to the party. As a result, Gamze hanım stormed out."
"Before long, we got a notice to shut the shop down. We went to
see Mayor İlgezdi but he wasn't sympathetic. He said 'my wife came
to your shop and was mistreated by another customer. You didn't
stand up for my wife and daughter! Didn't my wife come with a
reservation?' We told him she hadn't but he got upset and wouldn't
accept this, shouting 'get out! I don't care who you complain to,
I'm shutting you down!'"

wife Gamze hanım.
Erçevik explained further that he got a court order to prevent the
municipality from shutting him down but city officials came anyway,
ignoring the court order, and tried to close the shop. As for Mayor
İlgezdi, now feeling pressure from CİMER, the presidential (ruling
party AKP) watchdog, he said it was all just a political hit-job.
Exhibiting chivalry, the mayor said he makes such decisions about
shop closures and that Gamze hanım was as innocent as a newborn
lamb.
Ataşehir is right in the middle of the map.
