Novotel, a zero-star hotel.
Despite having paid for their rooms, 9 doctors from Cerrahpaşa
Medical Faculty, who are providing heroic services during the
coronavirus outbreak, have been thrown out of the Novotel Hotel in
the Zeytinburnu section of Istanbul because their presence upset
the other hotel guests and staff (!).
One of the doctors, Dr. Serhat Güler of the Pediatric Neurology
Department at Cerrahpaşa, revealed the incident in a tweet:
"Disrespect to health personnel who are on the job 24/7. Doctors from
Cerrahpaşa who took rooms at the Novotel Zeytinburnu hotel to keep a
safe distance from their families at home, have been evicted from the
hotel without any explanation."
Cerrahpaşa's Dean, Prof. Dr. Sait Gönen said in a statement that:
"With the support of the Istanbul Governor and the Provincial Health
Directorate, we placed 347 of our health personnel in various hotels.
We were unaware of the situation of our health personnel at that
(Novotel) hotel. We learned of it from the tweet and we have resettled
our personnel at another hotel."
In response to Dr. Güler's tweet, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu
said that "Hocam (my esteemed doctor), we are very sad about this
unpleasant treatment you were subject to at a hotel we do not control.
Rooms for you have been arranged at a nearby hotel. My people will
be in touch with you shortly."
Meanwhile, Novotel issued the following "obligatory" statement:
"If (!) Novotel Zeytinburnu has unintentionally distressed our
health personnel guests, we are deeply sorry. They will be provided
service, instead, at our İbis Zeytinburnu Hotel next door."
