Chinese geographers have been banned from entering Turkey
henceforth.
China sent Armenia aid packages for the coronavirus outbreak with
the following message pasted on each package, in English: "May our
friendship be higher than Mt. Ararat and longer than the Yangtze
River"
However (!), the message has sparked a diplomatic crisis between
Ankara and Beijing because Turkey considers the reference to Mt.
Ararat to be an infringement on Turkey's territorial integrity and
sovereignty. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy explained that:
What would Noah say?
"The reference to Mt. Ararat on the aid packages sent to Armenia by
China prompted us to make the necessary démarche. In response,
Ambassador Deng (in Ankara) told us that the aid for Armenia was
sent by a local administration in China and transported by a private
firm and that the local administration only wrote a message in Chinese,
without any reference to Mt. Ararat, while the English version
mentioning Mt. Ararat was added later."
Continuing, Aksoy said "Ambassador Deng has assured us that the
matter is currently being looked into and Turkey will be informed
of the results. He also said that China respects the sovereignty and
territorial integrity of Turkey."
Too close for aid and comfort to the enemy.
