Akarsu: "Practice Makes Perfect"
Samat Akarsu, a drug addict who lives in Demirköy district of
Kırklareli province and friends S.T. and U.V. stole a city hearse from
the municipal garage on the second day of the recent Ramazan holiday,
when a lockdown was in effect because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Akarsu and his friends drove the hearse to Çorlu district in Tekirdağ
province to buy drugs. (!)
The three amigos passed through lockdown checkpoints along the
way, saying that they were transporting a dead body. However, on
the return trip the Gendarmerie stopped the hearse in Lüleburgaz
district and took all three into custody. After questioning, Akarsu
was detained, while S.T. and U.V. were released.
Getting ready for the real thing: "Nice ride."
In his statement to police, Akarsu, who used to work for the Demirköy
municipality, explained that "after I took the hearse I picked up U.V.
and S.T. along the way. They didn't know I was going to buy drugs.
When we got to Çorlu I pulled into a gas station and went to buy the
drugs. On the way back the Gendarmerie stopped us. I bought 22
capsules of drugs to last me for 6-7 months. I didn't steal the hearse,
(I just borrowed it)."
Demirköy is at upper right, along the Black Sea coast.
