Regret having to see the sequel.
Yusuf Büyükdağ, an academician living in Minnesota, and his
American wife Alison Link, said that when they first saw the video
of George Floyd's death, their first reaction was "What?! Again?!"
Link noted that "we have seen similar incidents in the country and in
Minnesota before. I think that for me and many other Americans it
brought to mind the death of Eric Garner in New York in 2014 in like
circumstances. Since then the slogan 'I can't breathe!' has come to
represent police brutality against Black citizens. So to see another
Black man saying the same thing was like watching a horror film
over and over again."
The couple remarked about their disbelief that the other three police
officers who watched Floyd's death did not intervene. They noted,
as well, that the world's press is focusing more on the burning
buildings and looting rather than on the peaceful protestors.
Büyükdağ observed that protestors' efforts to protect local businesses
have been relegated to the back pages and Link stated that "for
example, the other night I went out with a friend to clean graffiti.
Many people were walking around or riding their bikes and we got
thanks for cleaning the graffiti. Residents here (Minneapolis) still
take pride in their city and most are hopeful that we'll see changes in
the future."
Büyükdağ stated that as a Turk he has not felt racism in America but
that racism against Blacks is always excessive.
Eric Garner's final moments in 2014.
