Before...
In Rize's Bağdatlı neighborhood a century-old tree that local
residents referred to as their "neighbor" has been cut to pieces.
The moments the tree was slaughtered were recorded on
telephones by the residents, who mourned the loss and who
were irate about not having been informed of its demise.

Officials of the Rize municipality claimed they had no say
in the tree's murder, passing the blame on to the Trabzon
Memorials Council:
"The tree had begun to rot from the inside so there was no
chance to save it. We (Rize municipality) followed orders
in cutting it down. But we left the roots" (!)
According to information that has been obtained, the tree
had been taken care of for a long time but at some point
vandals poured mercury on it, prompting the tree to rot
and hence the danger of its falling over.
