Istanbul taxi driver Travis Bikeloğlu.
Recently, complaints have increased about taxi drivers picking
up only tourists in areas of Istanbul such as Eminönü, Sultanahmet,
Beşiktaş and Taksim. A HaberTürk team investigated the matter
with an English-speaking team member who behaved like a tourist.
The situation turned out to be worse than anticipated!
In Sultanahmet, out of six taxis hailed only one would accept a
Turkish-speaker. But even English-speaking tourists who look
Western are rejected because they have become wise to the ways
of the Istanbul taxi drivers. The preferred customers are Arabs
because they bargain, thinking they are getting a good fare. In
reality, though, these Arabs are paying exorbitant taxi fares.
In Eminönü, again 6 out of 7 taxis would not accept Turkish-speakers.
A sample dialogue:
Taxi driver: "Where to?"
Customer: "Beşiktaş"
Taxi driver: "I can't take you."
The same driver, however, called to an Arab family and lamely
explained to the rejected customer that he would have to help
this 'stranded' Arab family. In Beşiktaş, 5 out of 6 taxis rejected
Turkish and English-speaking customers in preference to Arabs.
In total, the HaberTürk team found that 20 out of 21 taxis would
not accept Turkish-speakers and only 2 accepted English-speakers.
Bikeloğlu says he prefers free-spending Arabs like this guy.
