Smile! You're on Candid Camera! (Bribery Edition)
In Istanbul, Halil İbrahim Yanmaz, the owner of the Ilgın
Construction Firm, went to the police last week saying that
tax inspector Fatih Tezcan had indicated, through former tax
inspector Deniz Yıldırır and one B.Ö., that he wanted a 2 million
TL (about $500,000) bribe to wipe away Yanmaz's tax debt.
Police then had Yanmaz make arrangements with Tezcan to
deliver the bribe in installments, the first of which would be
250,000 TL. Tezcan took possession of the marked bills from
one of the firm's officials in front of a building in the Eyüp
section of the city. The exchange took place under the gaze
of surveilling police, who quickly moved in to arrest Tezcan,
who did not resist.
Another police team took Deniz Yıldırır and B.Ö. into custody
at their homes. Tezcan and Yıldırır were jailed and B.Ö. was
released.
"Yanmaz" means "fire-resistant" so he wasn't about to
let himself get burned.
