A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to the airport.
In Istanbul, Birgül Ekinci and her daughter summoned a
UBER taxi by phone from their home in İstiniye in order
to go to Atatürk Airport. As the cab approached the airport,
but before reaching it, the driver told his passengers to get
out, prompting an argument, in the course of which Birgül
hanım was beaten by the UBER driver.
As Birgül hanım lay on the ground with a blow to her nose,
her daughter ran for help to regular taxi driver Murat Tağu,
who took the pair into the airport. While Birgül hanım was
treated at the airport clinic, her daughter boarded a USA-bound
flight.
UBER driver M.Ü. (24) was later taken into custody by police
but released under court supervision. Taxi driver Tağu related
that "as I approached the airport a young girl came to me,
asking for help. The UBER driver had thrown the girl's
mother from the vehicle onto the barrier island. The driver
wanted 250 TL (about $75) from the pair but when the mother
objected an argument ensued."
UBER condemned the incident and said it had removed the
offending driver from its system.
UBER driver M.Ü. wondered what all the fuss was about.
