Archeological excavations are continuing in the area thought
to have been the site of the palace in Sardes Antique City, in
Salihli district of Manisa province. Sardes was the capital of
the Kingdom of Lydia and was host to many different civilizations
from the 7th century B.C. to the 7th century A.D.
The current dig at the palace area is the site of one of the 7
important churches of Christianity. But long before the Christians
were here there was a great battle between Lydia and the Persians
that brought the end of Lydian civilization in 546 B.C. and
some military equipment has been discovered that may be related
to this battle.
The excavation's chief, Prof. Dr. Nicholas Dunlop, explained that
last year his team found military armor, ivory parts of furniture
and a stone seal that would not have come from ordinary homes
of that period, but more likely from the palace area. Dr. Dunlop
added that "We're continuing our work in what we think is the
palace area this year. We have found earthen pots, cooking
vessels and a burnt piece of floor in which there were 3 arrowheads.These arrowheads may be from the last big battle (between Lidya
and the Persians). Up until today, 40-50 arrow heads have been
found in various areas of digs made on this hill."
