A conversation-starter. Just put it on your coffee table.
Ankara police got a tip that someone was trying to sell historic
items secreted away at a residence. In a subsequent raid on the home
of A.K. police found 28 ancient coins and a brass sphere covered with
human and animal figures, writings in Arabic, Persian and a still-
unidentified language, and astrological references. The sphere
was confiscated and sent to the Ethnographic Museum in Ankara.
An identical sphere is on display at the British Museum in London.
A 3-person committee of museum researchers prepared a report
about the sphere: "the Arabic writing on the sphere says 'in the
vastness of the sea, aid for a ship will come and the air will be an
advantage. Thanks to God, the flow of the water will pull the
ship but work will be the greatest advantage.' There are some
Shamanism-related lines on the sphere, which is called 'brass
celestial' in the scientific literature. We evaluate that the sphere
may have been used for astronomical research, maritime navigation
and astrologic predicitions."
As for A.K., who wanted to sell the sphere for $1 million, he said
that the sphere belonged to his ancestors in the Hışto family, given
to Hışto Seyit İmam Mehmed by individuals descended from the
Umayyad Dynasty. According to A.K., the sphere is magical and
protects one from the evil eye and all sorts of other bad things.
