Cem Hakverdi's new documentary film "Köpek Filmi" (The Dog
Movie) was shown to the press the day before yesterday. Preparations
for the film have been ongoing for two years and it is a movie that will
leave us face to face with some realities we've never thought about.
Hakverdi, an academician at Bilgi University in Istanbul, will show the
film at the 38th Istanbul Film Festival in the domestic documentary
category of competition. Next, the film will be presented at the 42nd
International Wildlife Film Festival. Portions of the movie were shot
in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Mardin, Nevşehir and Kars.

The idea for the work came to Hakverdi when he went to visit his
mother in Antalya. A dog named 'Zeytin' (olive) met Hakverdi at the
door and when the time came for him to leave, Zeytin accompanied
him all the way to the bus stop. But one morning Zeytin disappeared,
prompting Hakverdi to explore dogs' lives in this cinematic way.
The documentary takes a fresh look at the lives of dogs, with which
we live but prefer to ignore, for the most part. The violence, wounding
and hunger that dogs face every day is put in front of us in the film, as
we meet these ordinary heroes that live so close to us. Yet there are
many people who work hard to feed, care for and take in street dogs.
The film starts on Hayrısız Island off Istanbul, where more than 80,000
stray dogs were left to die after a bizarre purchase deal for them with
France fell through. Hakverdi's documentary addresses the issue of
human citification and the impact on other creatures that share our
environment, but suffer from our ill treatment of it and them.
The first showing of 'Köpek Filmi' at the Istanbul Film Festival will
be on 12 April.
