Master & slave, back together again.
Tedious and painstaking work has been going on at the excavations
at Laodikeia antique city in Denizli for the past year to put together a
statue of Roman Emperor Trajan. The statue was made in 113 A.D.
and discovered by Prof. Dr. Celal Şimşek and his team in a fountain
pool at Laodikeia in 2015.
The fountain was destroyed in an earthquake and under the debris
researchers found Trajan's statue broken into 356 parts (!).
Dr. Şimşek's 4-person team put all the pieces of the 3-meter statue
back together again over the course of a year. The parts of the
statue, which contains figures of both Trajan and a Dacian prisoner,
were reassembled by Dr. Şimşek's team consisting of an archeologist,
a restorer and two expert workers.

Dr. Şimşek explained that "we found the Trajan memorial fountain in
2015. It was a very nice fountain in semi-circle form. This area has
frequent earthquakes and the fountain was destroyed by one in 494
A.D. We extracted 356 pieces of the statue of Trajan, who extended
Rome's borders more than any other emperor. We also found the
text of an important law relating to water, comprised of 30 lines and
14 paragraphs: 'whoever takes the water belonging to the city will
pay a heavy price. We hereby give this warning and informers will be
rewarded.' The Emperor was 60-years-old when the statue was made.
We first found the head. It is perhaps the best portrait of him found
to this day. With regard to the proportions of the body parts, it is a
very high quality statue, exhibiting a very high level of art and skill."
