Huh?
In Yenidoğanlar village of Alaplı district, Zonguldak province, Mehmet
Akyol, Rıdvan Onay and Tahir Atay vied for the village chief position
in the local elections of 31 March. Onay defeated his two opponents
with 153 votes, to Akyol's 79 and Atay's 14.
Akyol, who has been the village chief for the past 20 years, did not
take defeat well. The morning after the election he demolished a
children's park that he had built a week earlier (!), cutting down the
swings and slides with a motorized saw. Akyol wanted to take the
materials away in his truck but his fellow villagers prevented this.
Saddam Hüssein was his boyhood idol.
Also on Monday, Akyol pulled out the electricity meter of his
office building and took the door lock and panel, along with coal
and wood. Villager Yasemin Çelik mused that "we had him as our
village chief for 20 years. And when he loses he acts like this?!
Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. We're very sad. Our
children are hanging their heads in shame."
As for Akyol, he claimed that the owner of the land on which the
children's park was situated had complained, adding that "I made
that children's park with my own means. I took out the materials
from the village chief's building that I paid for myself and had the
council members sign as witnesses."

Same election, same outfit - now that's togetherness!
In Heceler village of Orhangazi district, Bursa, father Ali and son
Zafer Sevinç competed against each other to be the village chief,
along with 5 other candidates on election day, 31 March.
Zafer Sevinç won with 81 out of 210 votes. The father and son
had been at odds with each other but mended fences with Zafer's
victory. Ali claimed that "I said God willing my son will win, and he
won!"
