Let's keep it all in the family.
In Seydişehir, Konya, last March, high school student H.E. (16) was
taken to a hospital, complaining of stomach pains. Doctors determined
that H.E. was pregnant and a cesarean operation was performed.
However, the baby was born dead. H.E. was interviewed by the public
prosecutor and she revealed that her older brother R.E. (31) had been
sexually abusing her for 2 years.
R.E. was taken into police custody and confessed. DNA samples were
taken from H.E. and R.E., as well as from the deceased baby, and it
was determined that R.E. was the child's father. A case was opened
against R.E. for "continuous sexual abuse of a child" and a jail
sentence of 56 years was requested by the prosecutor.
However, neither H.E. nor the siblings' parents S.E. and K.E., who
claimed to have had no knowledge of the situation, filed a complaint
against R.E. At a hearing on the case the day before yesterday, R.E.
was first given a jail sentence of 54 years but this was reduced to 45
years for 'good behavior' (!). Next, the court cited a provision in
Turkish law limiting the jail term to 30 years, so in the end R.E. was
given a 30-year prison sentence. (!)
Seydişehir is in southwestern Konya province.
