Istanbul's 2019 Murders - not world-class numbers but
always interesting.
Famous for not planning ahead.
On 30 January 2016, Abdullah Melih Barış (40) drove 800 kilometers
from Tokat to İstanbul and shot his girlfriend Nurcan Arslan, who
wanted to break up, 11 times, killing her. Barış was given a life
sentence but the appeals court ruled that the murder was not
premeditated (!) and ordered a re-trial.
At the initial hearing of the re-trial, Nurcan hanım's sister Gülcan
Arslan said "the murderer came from 800 kilometer away and shot
her 11 times. What else must there be to label a murder
premeditated!?"
Nurcan hanım had had a brief affair with Barış, who is the village
chief of Kurtuluş in Tokat's Almus district, and who is also the
married father of 3 children (!). The Bakırköy court in Istanbul
handed down a 'severe' life sentence for Barış but this was reduced
to simply life, for good behavior (!), prompting the Arslan family
to appeal.
Sigh...
However (!), the higher court determined that Barış had fired his
gun in a moment of anger and threw out the conviction. The first
hearing of the re-trial was held yesterday in Bakırköy but Barış
was not brought to court from prison so the hearing was
rescheduled for today.
