"Trees make me nervous."
The incident occurred in Mersin's Mezitli district in December. 1,511
pine trees (!), each about 70-years-old, were cut down in one night (!)
in an area adjacent to the site where a new 150-bed state hospital and
50-unit eye and dental clinic will be built.
People who came to the site in the morning for exercise were shocked
to see the tree massacre and quickly informed the authorities. Police
and forestry officials identified Mehmet Şenol as the culprit. In his
statement, Şenol admitted cutting down all 1,511 trees by himself,
explaining that "I was drunk that day because of family issues. That
night I cut down all the trees with a motorized saw. Since I was drunk
I didn't know what I was doing, but now I regret it." (!)
Şenol was jailed but released at the case's first hearing on 12 February.
Mersin Bar President Bilgin Yeşilboğaz, though, objected to Şenol's
release, declaring that one person could not possibly have cut down
1,511 trees in one night and demanding that the others involved be
found.
